Hi Everyone,

This email is going to all Computing students registered in CIS*1910.

We have no idea how you are doing in the course, we only see final grades.

Hopefully you are doing well, and then you can stop reading here.

CIS*1910 is a hard course. Discrete math is unlike anything you have seen up to now. If you are struggling you are not alone. You may be thinking about dropping/failing it and how that will impact your academics.

Considerations:

* If you mostly understand the material and you have a good chance at passing, even with a 50, that may be a good option. Especially if your other courses are going well with higher grades. * You do not need to have a 70% CIS average right now, it’s only checked at graduation. Generally, a cumulative GPA below 60% would be academic probation. * You won’t be dropped from Co-op (if you are in Co-op) as long as you make it up and stay on your academic&work sequence.

* If you do end up dropping or failing and want to stay on track with graduation you will likely need to make it up in the winter or summer at another university. You need CIS*1910 completed before you can take CIS*2030 and CIS*2520 next fall. * This approach is not easy. You would be becoming a visiting student at another university while also possibly taking Guelph courses, and would be registering and paying tuition at the other university for the course. * The known options for making up CIS*1910 are:

* TMU CMTH 110 * TRU MATH 1701 * Athabasca MATH 309 * Queen’s CISC 102 * McMaster COMPSCI 1DM3 * North Dakota MATH 208 * None of them will be a perfect match, you will need to do some self study as well.

* CIS*2910 requires CIS*1910 to be completed first. CIS*2910 is not required for other CIS courses, you can catch up on that in a later winter semester, after completing CIS*1910.
