Hi Everyone,
This email is going to all Computing students registered in a CIS course this fall. If you are not thinking about dropping any courses you can stop reading here.
The last day to drop fall courses without academic penalty is November 28. If you drop a fall course by then it disappears from your transcript.
In general, when dropping a course students are considering their chances of passing, their cumulative grade point average, and being academically full time or part time. Remaining in 2.0 credits or more after November 28th will make you a full-time student regardless of whether or not classes are passed or failed. Less than 2.0 credits past November 28th, part time.
Some considerations:
* International students usually have to be full time. https://www.uoguelph.ca/studentexperience/international-student-advising/
* Varsity athletes: eligibility to compete. Check with your Coach.
* Scholarships: some require full time.
* OSAP, but this varies. OSAP full time and academic full time are not always the same. finaid(a)uoguelph.ca<mailto:finaid@uoguelph.ca>
* Co-op: may be fine as long as you can continue following your sequence but please check in with coverlan(a)uoguelph.ca<mailto:coverlan@uoguelph.ca> well before the drop deadline.
* Health insurance, car insurance, etc. We don’t know, depends on your circumstances.
* The semester is long past refunds: https://www.uoguelph.ca/registrar/finances-fees/refunds-appeals/
Aside from those considerations students can generally study at their own pace, knowing that graduation will be delayed or credits need to be made up in summer.
Sincerely,
Greg and Sarah

Hi Everyone,
This email is going to all Computing students registered in CIS*1910.
We have no idea how you are doing in the course, we only see final grades.
Hopefully you are doing well, and then you can stop reading here.
CIS*1910 is a hard course. Discrete math is unlike anything you have seen up to now. If you are struggling you are not alone. You may be thinking about dropping/failing it and how that will impact your academics.
Considerations:
* If you mostly understand the material and you have a good chance at passing, even with a 50, that may be a good option. Especially if your other courses are going well with higher grades.
* You do not need to have a 70% CIS average right now, it’s only checked at graduation. Generally, a cumulative GPA below 60% would be academic probation.
* You won’t be dropped from Co-op (if you are in Co-op) as long as you make it up and stay on your academic&work sequence.
* If you do end up dropping or failing and want to stay on track with graduation you will likely need to make it up in the winter or summer at another university. You need CIS*1910 completed before you can take CIS*2030 and CIS*2520 next fall.
* This approach is not easy. You would be becoming a visiting student at another university while also possibly taking Guelph courses, and would be registering and paying tuition at the other university for the course.
* The known options for making up CIS*1910 are:
* TMU CMTH 110
* TRU MATH 1701
* Athabasca MATH 309
* Queen’s CISC 102
* McMaster COMPSCI 1DM3
* North Dakota MATH 208
* None of them will be a perfect match, you will need to do some self study as well.
* CIS*2910 requires CIS*1910 to be completed first. CIS*2910 is not required for other CIS courses, you can catch up on that in a later winter semester, after completing CIS*1910.
If you do drop or fail CIS*1910 you can start registering for your choice of make-up course. Please also send us a completed letter of permission form, after reading the second page:
https://api.liveugconthub.uoguelph.dev/sites/default/files/2025-07/request_…
If you are in a unique situation and this does not help you, please email cscouns(a)uogulph.ca<mailto:cscouns@uogulph.ca> AND explain your unique situation so we can help.
Sincerely,
Sarah and Greg

Hi Everyone,
Hope your semester is off to a great start!
Just a quick note to say that winter course registration is open.
If you have not registered in winter courses yet please do so very soon. Most CIS courses still have space but that free space may be taken away before January. Classrooms are close to being used 100% of the available times and courses that are not full may be moved to smaller classrooms. (Same for other subjects.)
CIS waitlists: if a CIS course is full or you can’t create a conflict free schedule then add to the waitlist. We don’t recommend waitlisting in core/required CIS courses unless you have to, to make a conflict free schedule. For example, CIS*2750 section 02 has lots of conflict free space (at a not ideal time, granted, but again, classrooms are at 100% use). It is not being considered for more space, if anything some labs will be removed.
The CIS courses that are full are being considered for more space but that may not be possible.
Sincerely,

Hi Everyone,
The slides from this morning’s academic program meeting are attached.
(Some of you may not be new students on the 2025 Calendar. The email is sent to all Computing students in first year CIS courses.)
Sincerely,
Sarah and Greg

Hi Everyone,
Students admitted to Bachelor of Computing, Computer Science or Software Engineering majors in 2025 have to complete one of the four Areas of Emphasis. The options are:
* Data Science
* User Experience
* Cybersecurity
* Artificial Intelligence
It will generally take at least six semesters to complete one, and does need some careful planning.
We recommend you declare and start your Area of Emphasis now. That gives you some flexibility in case you drop a course or there is a timetable conflict between two courses that you need later on.

Hi Everyone,
You are receiving this e-mail because you may be on one or more waitlist for a CIS course. To help you to make decisions, this is what we know currently:
We are checking with the School of Computer Science to see if it’s possible to add more space to:
Fall 2025:
* CIS*2750
* CIS*3090
* CIS*3130
* CIS*3530
* CIS*3750
* CIS*3760
* CIS*4020
Winter 2026:
* CIS*1050*DE
* CIS*1500
* CIS*3760
* CIS*4010
If you are on the waitlist in CIS courses not listed above you are waiting for other students to drop that section. No additional space is scheduled to become available.
Please take a look at ALL other sections of CIS courses to see if there are seats available in other sections or a different semester. You may need to page through multiple pages to see all of the sections. Consider registering in those sections now, before many restrictions lift on July 23rd.
If you don’t think you can make a conflict free schedule with required CIS courses please email us about that now: cscouns(a)uoguelph.ca<mailto:cscouns@uoguelph.ca>
Sincerely,
Sarah and Greg

Hi Everyone,
We have updated our website with the 2025 calendar year changes. You don’t have to change to this new calendar.
The CIS courses changing from 0.75 to 0.5 credits starting in fall 2025 will apply to everyone taking those courses going forward. If you have already completed some of them they will stay as 0.75cr.
If you would like to change to the 2025 academic requirements (mandatory Area of Emphasis, one extra 3000 level CIS elective) you can now start handing in the online Schedule of Studies change form like in the attached image. (With your current major and new AoE).
This would not change your Co-op academic-work sequence.
Sincerely,
Sarah and Greg
