Computing end of semester: quick notes

Hi Everyone, Classes are almost over, exams are about to start. A couple of quick notes. The last day to drop fall courses so they disappear from your transcript is tomorrow, Friday November 29th. If you are going to drop a course don’t wait until the last minute. Since the drop deadline was extended to right before exams, late drops are not possible. (Well, they are, but it’s a full academic consideration request that won’t even be considered by the committee until late January.) Exams start next week. If you unintentionally miss an exam (illness, massive traffic jam on the 401, bus cancellation, etc.) please let April and me know. If it’s your first (and hopefully last) missed exam you don’t need to get a doctor’s note unless you’re seeing a doctor anyway. This is specific to Computing students. Deferred exams will be written the week of February 3rd. (If you intentionally miss a final exam to get a 0 tell me why? That’s just fascinating.) CIS courses are as open as they are going to get. If you can’t add a required CIS course please let us know by December 6th. After that you may not be able to register in it. Josh asked me to tell you TA offers will be sent out Monday. CIS*3750 first, then CIS*3760

Hi Everyone, Just a quick note as there are some student questions regarding this. Depending on your Calendar year, it might show you taking CIS*3760 first, then CIS*3750. This is no longer the case, but it does not impact your progress towards graduation. These courses were redesigned based on student feedback. Students used to be able to take them in either sequence, because 3750 was fall only, 3760 was winter only. This basically resulted in two offerings of the same course. They are now offered both fall and winter, and content from 3750 is required for 3760. Hi Everyone, A couple of quick updates. You have two Program Counsellors now! April Nejedly started on Monday. Half or her role is program counselling, the other half is academic integrity education. This is good news because we will be able to provide more timely and thorough advising. She is learning the rules and guidelines and we will likely co-advise for a while. Course selection for the winter semester starts next week. The University already sent you a detailed email about it, but one quick note: CIS courses have “rolling caps”. We manually add space to courses as course selection windows open each day to ensure all students have a fair chance at adding electives, balance lab enrolments, and prevent schedule conflicts. A person in the UC manually has to do this each morning, so courses might be getting space between 8:30 and 9:30 in the morning. Don’t panic if there are no CIS spots at 8am. However, if you can’t add a required CIS course by noon on the day of your course selection please email me asking for help. Include the course and your student number. Thornbrough Door Access - Please Read

The following notice is sent on behalf of Roy Morales, BCH. Software Engineering Candidate. Good day fellow Computing Students, I hope this email finds you well. We have great news for all of you. As you may have experienced in the past, when you tried to pass by the doors in Thorn near South residence after 5pm and on weekends, your student card does not allow you to get into the building. We were instructed that the only way to get in was to walk around the building. Considering that most of the labs will now be held in Thorn, and how bad winter gets during this time of year, it was important that we had to do something about our access to the building. Director Pascal Matsakis has been supportive to get our request to get access to the building. We will finally have access to Thorn back doors near South Residence, even after 5pm and on weekends. We do not have to walk in the cold. YES! 😀 In return, we need all of you to be a part of the change, and make sure our second home, Lab rooms, are clean and tidy (or access to Thorn back doors will be revoked). Let's dispose our garbage and recyclables in their proper bins. Thank you very much.
