Dear Students, Would you like to know more about the upcoming changes to the Bachelor of Computing (B.Comp.) program? Join us for a virtual information session where we’ll walk you through what’s new (e.g. the new Areas of Emphasis), what’s changing (e.g. the 0.75 courses and the coop sequence), and what it all means for you. Letter of Permission Clarifications

Hi again, Some clarifications on taking a course at another university on a letter of permission (LOP). It’s a fairly risky approach for a required CIS course. If there are no other options then yes, go for the LOP, but for now, also consider that there is lots more time left in this semester, things change, maybe your current courses can work out. * You can’t be in the course when requesting the LOP. * We don’t make any guarantees on the other university’s course beyond that it will transfer as a credit as approved on the letter of permission if you pass it. The other university might not offer or cancel their course at anytime, even during the first weeks of the semester. * The LOP request does not register you in the course.You will need to work on your own to become a visiting student at that university, register for course at that university, and pay tuition to that university. * Grades from LOP courses do not transfer; they will be on your transcript with the other university. If you pass the course the credit will transfer but the grade will stay at the other University. * You will not be able to register in future Guelph courses that require the LOP course until you complete the letter of permission course and have the transfer credit processed at Guelph. * University courses are not identical; they vary. The LOP course will not be an exact match for the Guelph course but it will be close. The failed course + LOP course + some self study should help you to catch up and continue with your courses at Guelph. * There are additional details on page 2 of the form: https://www.uoguelph.ca/registrar/sites/undergraduate/files/docs/request_LO… Once you are sure on a LOP please send it to us and we will submit it. You will immediately be charged a non refundable $70 processing fee per request by Registrarial Services. Then you need to take the course and complete it in the semester shown on your LOP, pay tuition to the other university, and then pay for a transcript to be sent back to Guelph once you complete the course. If you fail the course or don’t order the transcript, the course will go on your transcript with an “F” for fail. The LOP course does not count towards Guelph registration, full time/part time status. The grade will stay on the other university’s transcript, it does not transfer to Guelph. Dropping semester four CIS courses?

Hi Everyone, A large part of our role is to inform students about their academic options. As we are starting to receive questions about dropping CIS*3110, CIS*2750, or CIS*3490, we are emailing so you can make informed decisions. First, to be clear, we don’t see in progress grades, only final grades. You may be doing well this semester, not even considering dropping any of those courses, in which case please ignore this email. Scenarios: * A student drops or fails CIS*3110: they can re-take it next winter at Guelph. Options for CIS electives will be limited until it is made up. You may be able to make it up earlier on a Letter of Permission (LOP). The main approved course is TMU’s CCPS 590 but there is also Ottawa’s CSI 3131, Waterloo’s CS350, or York’s EECS 3221. * Athabasca COMP341 and TRU’s COMP 3411 are not acceptable equivalents. * A student drops or fails CIS*3490: they can re-take it next winter at Guelph or take TMU’s CCPS 616 on LOP. * A student drops or fails CIS*2750: they can re-take it next Fall or Winter at Guelph. In all of these hypothetical scenarios the student would need to make up the missed 0.5 (or .75) credit by taking an extra course sometime before graduation. This could be a summer DE or regular course or a semester overload with 3.0 credits in a future semester, 3rd or 4th year. If you are dropping multiple courses or generally feel lost please check in so we can help you with an individual plan. A letter of permission [LOP] approves a course at another university for transfer credit to Guelph. You will need to work on your own to become a visiting student at that university, register for courses at that university, and pay tuition to that university. The LOP does not register you in the course. University courses are not identical, they vary. The LOP course will not be an exact match for the Guelph course. It will be close, and the failed course + LOP course + some self study should help you to catch up and continue with your courses at Guelph. Grades do not transfer, they will be on your transcript with the other university. There is no approved alternative course option to take before then. * A student drops or fails CIS*2500: if they plan to take semester 3 courses in the fall (CIS*2030, CIS*2430, CIS*2520) they need to make up this course in the summer at another university on a letter of permission. The main approved course is TMU’s CCPS 393. * A student drops or fails CIS*2910: they can re-take it in a later winter semester. It is not a pre-requisite for future CIS courses, as long as it is completed before graduation it’s fine. Hi 4th Year Students, Please note that CIS*4150 and CIS*4300 are restricted to SENG students at the start of course selection. SENG students, this is required for you, you will have Tuesday and Wednesday to register. If you need help with these courses during those days please email us right away. If you are a CS student and would like to take one or both of these courses please email us a request to add you as soon as your course selection window has opened. Fall 2024 Course Selection

Hi Everyone, Fall 2024 course information is on WebAdvisor now, please start planning your fall courses. Registrarial Services already sent you email, short version is course selection starts June 18th but your start date depends on you completed and in progress credits. If you have questions or concerns now is a good time to ask. For questions about your minor or the minor's courses the Faculty Advisors would be better: https://www.uoguelph.ca/uaic/facultyadvisors Many subjects will have restrictions, if you need a minor declared now would be a good time for that too: https://www.uoguelph.ca/computing/undergraduates/undergraduate-program-coun… If you are getting close to graduation please be careful with the WebAdvisor Planning tool. It is not always accurate, especially when counting 1000 level credits and COOP credits. During course selection we are helping a hundred to a hundred and fifty student a day. Please ask for help as soon as you need it, and the clearer you can be the faster we can help. Fall Course Selection

Hi Everyone, Before you leave for the summer, please put a reminder in your calendar about fall course registration (if you plan to register at Guelph). It is important for you to register in courses on the morning of the first day you can register. That is your best chance to register in the courses and sections you want and need. Course selection opens at 8 a.m. but some courses may get space a little later, around 9 a.m. Many sections get full by the afternoon. Tuesday, June 18 at 8 a.m. 17.75+ completed and in-progress credits, and students approved for priority access (e.g., all varsity athletes) Wednesday, June 19 at 8 a.m. 15.25+ completed and in-progress credits Thursday, June 20 at 8 a.m. 12.75+ completed and in-progress credits Friday, June 21 at 8 a.m. 10.25+ completed and in-progress credits Tuesday, June 25 at 8 a.m. 7.75+ completed and in-progress credits Wednesday, June 26 at 8 a.m. 5.25+ completed and in-progress credits Friday, June 28 at 8 a.m. 2.75+ completed and in-progress credits July 3, 4, 5 at 8 a.m. 0.00+ completed and in-progress credits by program.
