Hello,
As a student enrolled in a CIS course, I want to send an update on the labs in the Thornbrough building. As you know this is a new space and we are working to make it an effective environment for teaching and learning.
Over the past two semesters, rooms 2418 and 2420 have been the subject of miss-use and vandalism. The vandalism has been brought to the attention of campus police.
As a result of the costs incurred by the School in repairing and replacing destroyed and damaged equipment and due to the inaccessibility of these resources to our students, we are now implementing a new policy of keeping rooms 2420 locked 24/7. If you have a scheduled lab in the room, your TA will let you in. Alternately, you can obtain a FOB from Deb Byart (see below).
A solution for 2418 is also being developed, but will take longer, due to the "open" nature of the physical layout of the space.
None of these measure will be able to completely prevent the miss-use or damage to our labs. Another important component of protecting our space falls upon you! Please don't prop open the doors, or let in causal users of the labs (students not taking CIS courses). Additionally if you see damage or miss use of the lab facilities, please report them. Please include as much detail as possible and send it in an e-mail to director@socs.uoguelph.ca.
Finally, I want to extend an invitation to you to help make the School of Computer Science a better place to learn. Please feel free to contact me with any constructive suggestions on how we can improve our facilities, classes and community.
Kind regards,
Stefan Kremer Director, School of Computer Science director@socs.uoguelph.ca
Get your own FOB. ===============
You are now eligible to purchase a fob for access to the Thornbrough and Reynolds buildings.
Please come by Debra Byart's office in REY 112 anytime Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 1-4:00 p.m. to purchase your fob.
There is a $10 fee for the fobs. You MUST bring exact change or you won't be able to get your fob. This fee is non-refundable and the fob cannot be returned for a refund either.
Your fob won't be activated immediately but an email confirmation will be sent to you when it has been activated.
Once activated, you will be able to access:
1. The exterior door on the north side of Thornbrough facing the canon/closest to the stairwell leading up to the computer labs. 2. Thornbrough 2420. 3. Reynolds end doors for the basement and 1st floor.
Thank you.
