Hello, undergraduate students!
Please be advised that there is a last minute UTA posting that can be found on the UoG hiring portal (see here https://www.uoguelph.ca/sessional_ta/teaching-assistant) for CIS*3050. If you meet the required qualifications listed in the job posting, please consider applying!
This position will expire quickly due to the proximity to the beginning of the semester, and is currently set to expire at end of day, August 27th 2024. We cannot accept late applicants or applications by email.
Application Material
If this will be your first time applying to be a teaching assistant, you will have to set up your profile information, which will auto-populate some of the fields in your application material. After that, you can apply to be a UTA for any course listed as a UTA work assignment. Clicking on the Posting ID (far-left column in the table located on the page linked above) will provide you with the full description of the job, as well as any requirements we are looking for in potential candidates for the position. Although we are only posting to hire for one position per course, we might need more than one person for each course, depending on enrolment rates.
When applying, please remember to include the following information:
* The application material (as noted in the postings at the link above)
* Attach a PDF document that is a combination of both your resume and your unofficial transcript. Only one document can be uploaded with your application.
* These two pieces of information, alongside the application material, will collectively be used by the Hiring Committee to assess your qualifications (academic and professional), competence, capability, skill and ability, and prior relevant experience, as per the Collective Agreement.
* If you are applying for a position and have taken relevant courses outside of the University of Guelph or have been employed at a job related to the topics covered in the course, remember to include this in your application along with a short description of the course or job.
For any questions regarding the process, please contact Lauren King, the Instructional Support Coordinator for SoCS, at teachingsupport(a)socs.uoguelph.ca<mailto:teachingsupport@socs.uoguelph.ca>. Applications close on July 9th, 2024.

Welcome (or welcome back) to SoCS! The fall semester is rapidly approaching, and the staff and faculty of the School of Computer are busily preparing for the semester. The purpose of this email is to enlist your help in establishing an online SoCS community that will provide a single online space to support students, staff, and faculty. All you need to do is join this teams site<https://teams.microsoft.com/l/team/19%3AFkBqksRKZdgW9n1HrDXmJ1J5xtvhKnzyFBD…>. You will be asked for a team code. The code is: 32f9cxw
As you have undoubtably heard, the School of Computer Science has many more first year students this fall than expected. While the potential impact on first year students is obvious, many upper year students have been wondering whether the number of incoming students will impact them or not. The answer is “probably at least a little”. Upper year students are likely to notice that there are fewer free spaces to study and work on campus, that there are longer lines for services such as food or counselling, and that instructors have less time for drop-in help. An active online space can help mitigate those impacts as it can be used by the new students to help them navigate the university independently and with fewer missteps. It won’t take the place of any course communication channels that your instructors set up, but a central communication space can help students find solutions to problems that are not related to a single course, and it can be used to help students identify who should be contacted for course concerns when they are uncertain. There will also be channels dedicated to specific interest groups (e.g. WICS, GCC, and SOCIS)
We plan to combine this online community with a well curated intranet (under construction) to provide B.Comp. students with immediate answers to university related questions such as course selection, minors, how to request emergency accommodations and even suggestions for resources or help with specific courses. Please help us maintain a vibrant, helpful community by joining the teams site<https://teams.microsoft.com/l/team/19%3AFkBqksRKZdgW9n1HrDXmJ1J5xtvhKnzyFBD…>. You will be asked for a team code. Subject: Free AI Training Program for Post-Secondary Students
Hope things are going well for you so far this year. We have this automotive flavoured introductory AI training course that is funded by OCI through an OVIN program.
We have had solid uptake in SoCS working through the student clubs. We got a big boost in SOE, when Ibrahim sent it to all Engineering students. We are putting a push on to ensure that we exceed our required completion numbers.
Could you similarly put it out to CS students?
Thanks,
Kevin
